For International Education Week, there was a panel discussion for “Women Around the World.” There were five panelists. The entire discussion was simply the audience asking the women questions. The women were not clearly introduced, so I only caught a few of their names.
Vanita was from India and is getting her masters in computer science. Susanna was from Costa Rica is getting her masters in teaching international languages. Motoka was from Japan and is a speech pathology major. I don’t know the last two women’s names, however I know they were from China (an applied computer graphics major) and Saudi Arabia (an MIS undergraduate).
The topics that addressed in this Q&A were pretty much stuck individual marital status to education practices and general marital practices in their home country. In all of their backgrounds, the majority of married women are housewives, with some options for working. All of the women came from countries that in the past weren’t always educating women, but now are freely educating women. The type pf schools vary from being separate sex to mixed. Only the Saudi Arabian women is married; she met him over here and they have been married for eight months.
The room for the discussion was very full. All of the panelists were sitting down and I had difficulty seeing them. The set-up of the discussion was very disorganized and I felt the time could have been used much more effectively. I feel that it was almost a waste of my time to attend this event especially considering there were better ones available.
